Project SEAMIST started in 2010 when the Institute for Disaster and Emergency Preparedness (IDEP) at the Nova Southeastern University Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine received funding to provide occupational safety and health training for workers in the maritime industry. The project was funded by National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) of the National Institutes of Health for five years and received nearly $1.5 million in total funding.
With the funding from NIEHS, IDEP brought together a number of partners to provide hazardous materials/hazardous waste health and safety training to individuals associated with the maritime industry. The result of these partnerships was Project SEAMIST (Southeast Area Maritime Industry Safety Training). Project SEAMIST provides hazardous materials worker health and safety training to individuals employed on ships or those working in the marine shipping industry, including oil rig and oil platform workers, port workers, and law enforcement serving maritime venues.
In 2015, IDEP proposed to expand the existing training under NIEHS’s Hazardous Material Worker Health and Safety Training (HMWHST) program. This proposal was awarded in July 2015 which secured funding for another five year period. The increased funding includes a new initiative, the Hazardous Material Maritime Industry Response Training Safety Initiative (HazMIRTSI). HazMIRTSI will complement hazardous materials training currently provided by SEAMIST by providing critical curricular training focused on hazardous materials disaster response preparedness.
