Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology

  • Application Deadlines
  • Complete your CSDCAS Online application (Communication Sciences and Disorders Centralized Application Services) which includes:
    • Official transcript indicating conferral of a bachelor's degree or a graduate degree from a regionally accredited institution
    • Official transcripts from all previously attended postsecondary institutions
  • A minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average (cGPA) of all college-level courses
  • Completion of six (6) Communication Science and Disorders (CSD) prerequisite courses with grades of B- or better (eighteen semester hours). (See PREREQUISITE COURSES further down for more information). Courses must be completed before the first day of the term of enrollment.
  • Completion of the four (4) ASHA Knowledge Outcome coursework with grades of C- or better. (See the PREREQUISITE COURSES tab further down for more information).
  • Completion of 25 hours of guided clinical observation of (an) ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist(s) with appropriate documentation. Appropriate documentation is either a letter verifying completion, including name, signature, date of signature, statement re: time of completion, and ASHA certification number of the person verifying completion OR a log of all completed observations, signed by each ASHA-certified SLP observed, with the ASHA certification number of each SLP observed. If not completed as part of a course, the student must include a written statement confirming a discussion between the student and the observed SLP regarding what was observed, etc. Letters are to be on letterhead. There is NOT a standard form for logging hours. You can create your own, following the guidelines above.

Ph.D. in Physical Therapy

Selection of students for the Physical Therapy Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program is based on prior academic performance, clinical experiences, and references. We seek students who are critical thinkers and have qualities such as assertiveness, initiative, leadership, self-understanding, openness, and strong communication skills. Students must also be motivated and self-directed. 

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a graduate of schools accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Physical therapy Education (CAPTE). Graduates of physical therapy schools in other countries are also eligible with review of academic credentials by an appropriate agency (details below) and review of English proficiency scores as applicable.
  2. A qualified applicant with a master's degree or an entry-level DPT degree is required to complete a course of study with a minimum of 60 credit hours.
  3. A qualified applicant with a post professional doctoral (including transitional DPT) degree from a regionally accredited school may transfer up to 6 credit hours.
  4. Demonstrate English language proficiency, if appropriate, with test scores from TOEFL, Cambridge, IELTS, etc. See NSU's language proficiency requirements for more guidance. 
  5. Have a minimum of 3 years of clinical experience as a physical therapist by the time of program start.

The Dean is empowered to evaluate the total qualifications of every student and to modify requirements in unusual circumstances.

Due to the competitive application pool, it is recommended that you start your application process at least 1-2 months prior to the deadline dates. The Office of Admissions processes applications on a year-round basis.

Submit GRE scores (if required)

GRE scores* are not required if you have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. If you have less than a 3.5 GPA, a total score of 300 or higher on the combined verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE taken within the past five years is required. Please have your official scores sent to the mailing address below.

For students seeking admittance after attending another institution, credits may be transferred into the NSU program. Credits will be determined on a case-by-case basis and must be deemed comparable in level, content, and rigor to those within the desired program. All transfer students must satisfy all admissions requirements and complete all admissions procedures.

Foreign nationals who reside outside the United States at the time of application, and whose native language is not English, must present evidence of proficiency in English by satisfactorily completing the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Score requirements are as follows: minimum paper score = 550; minimum computerized score = 213; minimum Internet score = 79. A score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (ILETS) exam is accepted in lieu of the TOEFL.
