Mission
The Department of Medical Education at NSU’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine aims to serve as a hub of excellence for teaching, learning, and evaluation. We offer advanced medical education support to design, develop, and deliver high-quality instruction and assessment in medical education for medical students, interns, residents, physicians, and other health professionals. Leveraging state-of-the-art technology and educational practices, we aim to transform the finest professionals in the health care field.
Department Goals
- Serve as the center for teaching, learning, evaluation, and leadership within the college and the osteopathic profession.
- Design, develop, and deliver top-tier programs in clinical skills instruction, simulation, and assessment for the NSU community of health professionals.
- Provide expertise and resources in education, assessment, leadership, data analysis, and technology to support the development of health care professionals.
- Provide academic advising to support student growth and progress throughout the curriculum.

The Department of Medical Education manages the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine’s curriculum to ensure alignment with medical education standards. Through ongoing feedback collection and academic assistance programs, we strive for continuous improvement.
The department also provides academic advising to students at both the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Main Campus and the Tampa Bay Regional Campus. Individual counseling sessions are offered in-person and online with extended hours to accommodate students during any year of medical school. Academic advisors provide opportunities for students to learn about study skills, time management, learning styles, test taking skills, and board preparation techniques. Our data analysis services support admissions, student progression, curriculum development, and course evaluation. We also provide academic support for grading, attendance reporting, and clinical skills assessment. For research support, contact the data team at (954) 262-4390.
Dr. Samantha Lemus, Director of Faculty Development (slemus@nova.edu), offers guidance and resources for educational methods, technology integration, and course development. Faculty engagement is encouraged through our lunch-and-learn sessions and specialized programs like the ETA program, Faculty Wellness Series, and Neuro Immune Institute Research Seminars.
Our comprehensive training courses integrate standardized patients, medical simulation, clinical skills examinations, OSCEs, and preparation for the COMLEX 2 PE. Led by the Executive Medical Director, Dr. Heather McCarthy, our Clinical Skills Learning Center immersive training in physician-patient interactions. Standardized Patient Simulation Lab (Room #3149): Located conveniently on the first floor, our lab offers immersive experiences with standardized patients, right across from the Juice Blends Kiosk inside the HPD Terry Building.
Medical Simulation Clinic: Situated between the Ziff Clinic and the Dental Building, our clinic provides hands-on training in a variety of medical procedures under the guidance of expert faculty.
