The Nova Southeastern University Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine (NSU-KPCOM) Psychiatry Residency Program, in partnership with the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System (Bay Pines VAHS), is a dynamic training program dedicated to excellence in medical education, patient care, and scholarly achievement. We offer robust clinical experiences grounded in comprehensive didactics and innovative, active learning methodologies, spanning the full spectrum of psychiatry, from foundational neuroscience and psychopharmacology to the nuanced, evidence based practice of psychotherapy.

Our mission is to prepare every graduating resident to meet the demands of 21st century psychiatric practice, a mission made increasingly urgent by Florida's deepening mental health workforce crisis. Florida currently ranks 42nd nationally in psychiatrist availability, with only one psychiatrist per 8,577 residents, nearly 70% below the national average. As of 2024, 58 of Florida's 67 counties face whole county psychiatrist shortages, only 23.8% of the state's psychiatric need is being met, and more than 40% of Florida's active psychiatrists are at or near retirement age. Without meaningful intervention, Florida's psychiatric supply adequacy is projected to decline to just 62% by 2035. West central Florida remains among the most critically underserved regions in the state, making programs like ours essential to closing this gap.

Over four years, residents engage in rigorous, patient centered care across diverse inpatient and outpatient settings, developing a comprehensive understanding of psychiatric treatment and its transformative impact on patients' quality of life. Our educational model integrates supervised clinical practice, structured didactics, and self directed learning to foster both clinical excellence and lifelong intellectual growth.

Resident progress is evaluated continuously using the ACGME Psychiatry Milestones framework, with each resident encouraged to cultivate short  and long term professional goals and an unwavering commitment to patient care improvement.

Sincerely,
Ahmed Maher, M.D.
