Professional Interests

Professor Emeritus Dr. Douglas Flemons taught in the Department of Couple and Family Therapy for 31 years. He served as the director of the doctoral program for 2 ½ years and the director of the Brief Therapy Institute for 5 years. He was the founder and director of NSU Student Counseling for 6 ½ years and was co-director (with Dr. Scott Poland) of the NSU Office of Suicide and Violence Prevention Office for 13 years.

Dr. Flemons is the author of books on empathy (Empathic Engagement, forthcoming from APA), writing (Writing Between the Lines, W. W. Norton), hypnosis and therapy (The Heart and Mind of Hypnotherapy and Of One Mind, both W. W. Norton), psychotherapy and Eastern philosophy (Completing Distinctions, Shambhala), and suicide assessment (Relational Suicide Assessment, W. W. Norton—co-authored with Dr. Len Gralnik). He is also co-editor, with his wife and colleague, Dr. Shelley Green, of three editions of a book on brief sex therapy (Quickies, W. W. Norton). Dr. Flemons maintains a telehealth-based private practice and presents widely on empathy, hypnosis, suicide and suicide assessment, and psychotherapy and brief therapy.
