New Student Orientation

Congratulations on your acceptance to Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine's Health Informatics Program! Below you will find specific information on what you need to do

After receiving acceptance letters:

After reviewing the terms of your acceptance outlined in your admission letters, the first thing you need to do is complete and submit your Intent To Enroll Form to the Admissions Office. Once received, they will update your status to a fully admitted student in the program to which you have been admitted.

If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact the Program Manager, Dana Famularo, at (954) 262-1032.

After submitting your Intent To Enroll Form:

After accepting your admission into the Health Informatics Program, there are now several things that you will need to do in order to start taking courses.

It is extremely important that you access your NSU email as soon as possible. This is the only email address that we will be communicating with you, and you will need to know your email password in order to register for courses and view those courses. Please go to SharkPass and retrieve your NSU ID, PIN, and Sharklink ID. It may take a few days after you have returned your intent to enroll form for these to be available, but if it has been more than two days and you are still unable to get any of these things from this page, you will need to call the Help Desk at 954-262-HELP. You will need all three of these things to sign into the various systems the university uses. These systems are as follows:

  • Self-Service Banner (WebSTAR)‚ This is where you will register for courses, view your schedule, and view your unofficial transcripts. You will use your NSU ID and PIN to log into Self-Service Banner.
  • Canvas‚ This is where you will view and take your online courses. You will use your Sharklink ID and password to log into Canvas. Canvas also offers online tutorials so that you can get used to using the program. Please take a few minutes to complete the tutorial if this is the first time you are using Canvas.
  • SharkMail‚ This is where you will access your NSU email. Note that your Sharklink ID with @nova.edu attached will be your Nova email address. You can have your NSU email forwarded to a personal account if you wish. More information/assistance with your email can be found online at the Student Help Desk.
  • Sharklink‚ Sharklink is NSU's new system that combines Self-Service Banner (WebSTAR), Canvas, and WebMail into one place. You will need your Sharklink ID and password to sign in.

Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the student handbook and catalog and all policies and procedures contained within each for the program. Also, please be sure that you complete any necessary forms sent to you by the university, including the health insurance waiver, if applicable, so as not to incur any unnecessary charges.

Schedules, booklists, and information on advising and registration will be sent to your NSU email address as they become available for each term. You will also receive information regarding free HIMSS membership for students as a part of the Health Informatics Program's Academic Organizational Affiliate Status. If you would like access to a NextGen electronic medical record (EMR) sandbox during your studies which will allow you to explore and get to know the system in your free time, please complete the request form and submit it to Dana Famularo.

You can contact the program offices for advising at any time.

If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact the Program Manager, Dana Famularo, at (954) 262-1032.

After registering for classes:

If you are not familiar with Canvas, please take some time to go through the tutorials in order to familiarize yourself. Please note that students are not typically uploaded into the courses until two days before they begin. Once classes begin, please be sure that you are regularly checking both your NSU email and the separate email messages that are sent within each course to be sure that you don't miss anything important. Welcome to the Health Informatics Program! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the program offices:
