Welcome Message

Welcome to the Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) major at the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine. HDFS is an exciting major that provides students with an interdisciplinary program of study that will help them develop an empirical framework for understanding the development of individuals and families across the life span. Our HDFS courses cover a wide variety of topics and are taught in small classroom settings by energetic faculty.

HDFS faculty at the college study a variety of issues focused on the individual and the family, including emotional and psychosocial development across the lifespan (for example, toddlerhood, middle childhood, adolescence, emerging adulthood), issues related to gerontology, pregnancy concerns in teenage mothers, women and health issues in Ghana, and social justice issues in Miami, Florida. Our faculty is committed to engage students in hands-on research and their next project could include you. We look forward to seeing you in class!

  • A bachelor's degree in HDFS provides an excellent foundation for advanced academic work.
  • HDFS serves as an outstanding complement to work in other disciplines, such as psychology, sociology, marriage and family therapy, social work, counseling, anthropology, women's studies, and education.
