Read-On is a program started by Sigma Sigma Phi National Osteopathic Honor Society at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine five years ago. The goal of this program is to help elementary school students improve their reading skills. Our volunteers strive to become mentors for the children we work with by committing ourselves to the same classes. The result of this vision is program for kindergarten and 1st grade students, which seeks to encourage imaginative exploration through the reading.
Currently, we visit the Pediatrics Department at Broward General Hospital. In these events we have the additional goal to provide companionship and positive thinking for the children, especially for those in long term care. We hope to make a difference in the children's lives by inspiring and encouraging them to improve their ability to read.
We welcome the opportunity to work with any elementary school to foster a child's curiosity in health and medicine and encourage them to open themselves to a lifetime of learning through reading.
