Master of Public Health

Earn the versatility of a public health degree in our forward-thinking M.P.H. program. Based in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, the degree prepares you to define, critically assess, and resolve public health problems by applying the theories, concepts, and principles of public health. To meet the rapidly changing needs of health service professionals, including preventive medicine specialists, the curriculum accommodates a diversity of backgrounds and individual career goals.

What you'll study

Epidemiology and other core courses lead into specialized study in your electives, such as women's health and substance abuse. A required, six-credit public health field experience and a capstone project build your confidence, and you may choose community health projects and research as elective projects.

How you'll learn more

Offering both online or on-site, and full or part-time study, the M.P.H Program connects you with experts in the fields of biomedical informatics, osteopathic medicine, and public policy. Dedicated institutes in the College of Osteopathic Medicine expose you to research on geriatrics, homelessness, chronic fatigue syndrome, emergency preparedness, and medical education. Your supervised field experience and capstone experience results in a professional report in your area of interest.

Demand for public health professionals is growing as a result of emerging and re-emerging diseases, environmental health concerns, health care reform, and sociopolitical factors affecting our nation and worldwide health. Professionals with the M.P.H. degree may work in a variety of settings and take active roles in shaping the agenda of the future of health care.

  1. Communicate public health information and issues effectively to health professionals, and the public, through diverse communication channels.
  2. Apply information technology to diverse aspects of public health and communication.
  3. Critically review and apply evidence-based evaluation of published medical and public health literature.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of the principles of, and the legal and ethical applications to, the collection of research data from human subject, as well as to the collection and reporting of other public health data.
  5. Identify appropriate national, state and local public health surveillance data, and other data sources, and apply them to public health problems.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to discuss a public health problem substantively and scientifically, including demographics, geography, magnitude and time trends.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of environmental risk assessment, including exposure to toxic substances, contaminated air, food and water.
  8. Formulate a research or evaluation proposal to address public health problems.
  9. Demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of the basic legal authority for public health.
  10. Develop a plan for a public health program utilizing strategies and models responsive to diverse cultural values and traditions of a community.
  11. Discuss and explain the typical operations and procedures of health departments and other agencies responsible for public health.
  12. Identify and discuss strategies for collaboration and partnership among organizations focused on public health goals.
  13. Discuss ethical choices, values and professional practices implicit in public health decisions, considering the effect of those choices on social justice and accountability.
  14. Describe and discuss the organization, financing, delivery, maintenance and administration of health service programs.
  15. Apply appropriate statistical principles to the description, evaluation and/or assessment of public health problems or programs.
  16. Demonstrate the ability to apply descriptive and inferential methods to solve public health problems.
  17. Demonstrate understanding of the standard epidemiological procedures used to conduct an outbreak investigation.
  18. Outline a plan for the delivery of health services for an underserved population, taking into account the health disparities affecting the populations.
  19. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of strategic planning for health service programs.
  20. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the policies, procedures and processes involved in the comprehensive management of a disaster.
  21. Evaluate a public health program or initiative, taking into account legal, economic, financing and effectiveness parameters.
  22. Demonstrate comprehension of the principles of social and behavioral risk assessment applying the ecological model.
  23. Demonstrate comprehension of the application of standard statistical packages used to analyze public health data sets. (e.g., SAS, Epi-Info).
  24. Demonstrate understanding of the three core functions of public health (assessment, policy development and assurance).
